Abstract
The French convergence market is one of the most advanced in Europe with a
strong deployment of operators' branded multimedia boxes across French
households supporting ADSL and fibre optic broadband access, VoIP, IPTV as
well as premium content such as pay-TV channels, VoD titles and music
services. Factors such as robust regulatory and government policies aimed at
addressing the digital divide, widespread availability of fully unbundled
lines and a strong tradition of pay TV services, have all contributed to an
advanced level of convergence in the home environment.
Integration with mobile services is also very high with most triple-play
propositions for the home including unlimited calls to mobiles and free Wi-Fi
access via national hotspot networks. Furthermore, all the major convergent
players are also actively promoting quad-play offers combining a selection of
high-value mobile plans with triple-play solutions for the home into a single
bill.
In recent years, all the major players have taken measures to strengthen their
position in the convergence market with key actions involving brand
integration (e.g. France Telecom to Orange and Neuf Cegetel to SFR) and
extension of service reach. As a result all the key French players are well
positioned to lead in terms of convergence innovation in the future.
