Heart valve disease, at its most rudimentary level, is the malfunctioning of the heart's valves can result from incomplete (inadequate) opening or close. In some cases, insufficiency and narrowing of the heart valve can occur at the same time. This occurs when the leaflets of the heart valve become shrunken and stiff while the valve is fixed in a half-open position. Based on available statistical data, approximately 4 million people in the U.S. are diagnosed with valvular heart disease annually-translating to an estimated prevalence of over 20 million.

The diagnosis and evaluation of heart valve disease is managed through five primary non-invasive diagnostic imaging modalities: cardiac catheterization, diagnostic ultrasound, electrocardiography and X-ray. Therapeutic modalities used in the treatment of heart valve disease include invasive open heart surgical methods such as heart valve repair and heart valve replacement. In addition to invasive surgical modalities, minimally invasive transcatheter techniques are being established and implemented as a safer alternative to open heart surgical repair and replacement. Minimally invasive techniques currently used in the management of heart valve disease include percutaneous balloon valvuloplasty, percutaneous heart valve repair, and percutaneous heart valve replacement. In the U.S. it is expected that the combined volume of these procedures will decline slightly at a compound annual rate of 0.6% over the next half-decade, decreasing slightly from approximately 2.6 million in 2013 to an estimated 2.5 million in the year 2018. The total product sales for diagnostic and interventional systems used in the management of heart valve disorders is expected to grow at a compound annual rate of 4.4% over the forecast period covered by this report, from approximately $2.3 billion in 2013 to an estimated $3.1 billion in the year 2019. The slight decline is attributed to a reduction in the number of invasive diagnostic procedures being performed, which currently make up the majority of total diagnostic procedures.
