Akira Nozaki, General Manager, Raw Materials Dept, Sumitomo Metal Mining Co Ltd

Despite a recent slowdown, equally typical for all regional economies, Asia's importance in global manufacturing has still brought the GDP growth rate of the composing economies above the double digit threshold, making it the second most rapidly expanding region globally. The Southeast Asian economy in particular has been gaining vast momentum in terms of both current and projected steel demand. In 2010 the national economies of the member states of the Asia Pacific Economic Cooperation (APEC) saw a dramatic economic rebound fuelled by US "quantitative easing" (QE) policies further emphasized by aggressive credit-driven construction and infrastructure development programmes spurring a hike in the demand for commodities. How sustainable is this longer-term and what will this mean to the regional steel industry

The Southeast Asian construction sector is set to grow on average 6% per annum out to 2020. Indonesia, Vietnam, Philippines in particular will have their construction sectors expanding faster than any time before as a result of governmental stimulus, on-going industrialisation and the expansion of the urban population. New regional emerging markets such as Bangladesh and Myanmar are expected to post strongest growth rates in the region.

However, the spectre of global steel over-capacity we currently face, rising trade protectionism, weak steel mill profitability, and greater market uncertainty surrounding China, has meant that strategic and market intelligence for the region has never been more important than it is today.

The future direction of the Chinese steel industry, its political and economic interactions with its neighbouring markets, and the internal prospects of each of the steel industries within Southeast Asia now suddenly requires much closer examination and potential re-assessment.

How has Chinese boron steel significantly altered the regional steel market

The 'Boron Steel Loophole Phenomena' has had a significant impact on the region and analysing trade and consumption patterns not being accurately captured by more conventional data associations / agencies. Since 2010 Chinese producers use boron in their carbon steel products to by-pass customs duties and make their products more price competitive
