Abstract
This IDC Manufacturing Insights Perspective highlights our research outlook of
the mining industry, including top IT spending priorities, business challenges,
and regional differences.
We consider the mining industry to be part
of the asset-oriented value chains (AOVCs), joining the ranks of
manufacturers that produce base materials at asset-intensive production facilities, with
a focus on the efficiency and deployment of assets. Other
segments include chemicals, metals, pulp/paper, construction materials, and textiles.
Mining companies
depend heavily upon the equipment they use for production and
processing (including heavy-duty trucks, drills, conveyors, crushers) and frequently affiliate
with construction businesses. They occasionally behave more like engineering-oriented value
chains (EOVCs), such as manufacturers of industrial machinery and farm/construction
equipment. But their equipment dependence is also what aligns them
with the AOVC, with the difference being that mining companies'
assets are rarely stationary and subject to variable environmental conditions,
often harsh. We also find that mining, as an extraction
business, exhibits some similarities to (or may be integrated within)
companies in the oil and gas or utilities industries.
