目錄

Abstract

This study analyzes the results of IDC Manufacturing Insights' most recent survey carried out in Western Europe in 2009. The survey is based on 110 interviews at firms operating across Germany, the U.K., France, Italy, and Spain.

In particular, we analyze in this report the asset-oriented value chain (AOVC), which comprises manufacturers of base materials produced at asset-intensive facilities working in sectors such as fabricated metal, furniture, leather, wood products, chemicals or petroleum refining, primary metals, pulp/paper, rubber and plastic, stone, clay, glass, concrete, tobacco, textiles, pharmaceuticals and biotechnology, and other process manufacturing companies.

This study clarifies how overall ICT budgets are changing, which line items will increase or decrease, and business managers' and CIOs' priorities. It also shows how managers across Europe are responding differently to the recession.

This report is part of a series of reports, which include:

  • IT vendor selection criteria and level of satisfaction
  • Analysis of business solution adoption and investment plans

"The recession has punctured business confidence. Cutting IT costs is a top priority, budgets, including budgets for maintenance spending, are under pressure, and users are focusing on projects that deliver rapid payback," said Pierfrancesco Manenti, EMEA research director, Manufacturing Insights. "However, despite the gloom, the process manufacturing industry is one of the largest IT spenders in Western Europe. It continues to offer large opportunities to those IT vendors that offer the appropriate solutions in the current climate."
