DAS technology involves the use of optoelectronic devices to detect acoustic energy by employing an optical fiber which functions as a sensing element. The technology has the capability to detect the change, pinpoint the location of the disturbance, and identify its nature. This enables the detection of the cause of the disturbance even if the event causing the disturbance is not in direct contact with the fiber optic cable. This technology is being used for a number of applications across verticals such as military, infrastructure, oil & gas, and transportation.

DAS technology has been successfully implemented for the pipeline integrity management application in the oil & gas vertical. Oil & gas companies are always on the lookout for technologies that can improve the safety of their pipelines. The early detection of leaks can save losses worth millions of dollars and also prevent environmental damage that would further invite litigations. Furthermore, any damage to pipelines due to third-party intrusion activities can also result in considerable loss. As DAS technology relies on optical sensing, it is free from any electromagnetic interference as well as the risk of electric hazards which affect electrical sensing systems. DAS technology is increasingly used in other verticals such transportation, military, and infrastructure.

The improved reliability of DAS equipment, its ability to operate in harsh environments, and its increasing ability to gather key data required to reduce operating costs in the oil & gas sector are some of the key drivers of the DAS technology. However, managing complex sets of data generated by DAS technology is one of the greatest restraints for this technology. Using existing fiber optic infrastructure for oilfield services is a potential growth opportunity for the technology in the near future. The most important challenge for DAS system providers is to develop standards and guidelines for DAS equipment. The key to success, however, is improving collaboration with customers to gain a deeper understanding of customers' requirements and working together to develop better solutions.
