A greenhouse is a structure used for growing plants in a controlled environment. The rise in population in urban areas leads to a domino effect for increased food production, wherein through natural lighting, food can be produced on seasonal basis. Owing to this, smart greenhouses use advanced technologies to provide the required environment for high yield. Hydroponic and non-hydroponic are types of smart greenhouses used for urban farming. Traditionally, majority of the greenhouses used soil as the base for growing plants. However, hydroponic or soil-less horticulture has recently started gaining popularity in the greenhouse industry. Both techniques of crop cultivation have certain benefits of their own. The primary concern of growers while selecting hydroponics or soil-less technique greenhouses is the availability of technical infrastructure, skilled workforce to assist in installation & operation, capital requirement, and environmental factors.

Earlier, the Netherlands used greenhouses for the development of urban farming and fulfill the requirement of urban customers. However, with advancements in technology, every region is witnessing an impressive growth in this market. Non-hydroponic growing technique is favored all over and held the largest share in the overall smart greenhouse market. Non-hydroponic technique makes use of soil as the base for growing plants. Traditional controlled environment agriculture began by using soil as the base for all plants due to its easy availability and less initial infrastructure costs. That is why, even today a majority of greenhouses across the world follow this technique.
