As the government norms become more stringent and the demand for safety increases, more and more sensors are needed, to meet this demand. The sensors used in an automobile in 1960s were mainly restricted to functions relating to the powertrain while modern day vehicles use sensors across a spectrum of functions such as exhaust, interior comfort systems, safety systems, and others. These sensors are developed keeping in mind the government norms, emission limits, and the customers demand for safety and comfort. The surge in this market started form 1970's where first microprocessor-based engine control modules were formulated to meet the emission norms from the government of the U.S.. These systems had new sensors such as manifold absolute pressure sensor, air fuel ratio operating point sensors, and many more. These systems ushered in a new era of collaborative development of the automotive and electronics industry.

Technologies such as ABS, ESC, and TPMS demand robustness and accuracy, as the slightest of errors in these sensors can be the difference between safety and mishaps. The regulations in North America, Japan, China and South Korea majorly drive the sensor market making these countries a booming market for passenger car sensors. The stringent regulations also make room for advanced features such as tire pressure monitoring systems, electronic stability control, occupant detection, and others which in turn drives the sensors' market.
