To meet government ambitions of positioning China as a leading global bio-based material and chemical supplier and leverage technology achievements of local researchers, Chinese industry players are building large capacities to tap into growing global demand, consequently raising the country's status as a key bio-based polymer producer. Meanwhile, non-Chinese firms are positioning themselves in China by either implementing their technologies locally or making bets on the prospects of this market. We compare Chinese bio-based polymer developers with their global counterparts to reveal several Chinese companies with global competitiveness in production of starch-based plastics, long-chain di-acids, phenolic resins, and bio-based nylons, while others must reduce cost or improve business execution to achieve success.
