Cellulosic and waste-based alternative fuels face challenges scaling up - both around technology and feedstock availability. Electrofuels offer an alternate route to fuel production, requiring no biomass and producing a drop-in fuel. However, the technology is still lab-scale and the economics are uncertain, at best. For this report, we built a detailed cost model to analyze the effects of technology advancements: water electrolysis efficiency, microbial conversion yield, and catalyst efficiency. We then analyzed the effects of electricity price and hydrogen price on electrofuel production costs to assess the economic viability and identify key drivers in production cost along the electrofuels value chain.
