We are entering the pivot point of a once-in-a-generation opportunity to build the infrastructure that will power the Internet of Things. Data center traffic is predicted to triple in the next three years, and with it, data centers are getting larger, to the tune of tens of megawatts of computing capacity. In some regions, data center capacity is growing at 60% year on year. These facilities are special in terms of their high energy and cooling requirements, and technologies are competing to supply the robust cooling infrastructure necessary to support these facilities, and deliver the lowest total cost of operation (TCO). We evaluated 12 high-growth regions across the Americas, Europe, and Asia-Pacific to evaluate which technologies are best poised for growth, and the total market opportunity in data center cooling equipment.
Industrial-scale data centers will continue to grow to meet the rapid growth in Web traffic, and conventional technologies will be used in the quest to lower total cost of operation.
Emerging regions have data center growth rates in some cases over 50%, but the optimal design is a balance of factors to cool the over 50GW of excess heat.
