Description

Catalysts are essential for innumerable processes, yet often employ expensive platinum group metals (PGMs), leaving many important products vulnerable to price spikes. The need for emerging technologies that can reduce or replace outright the PGM content in catalysts without detracting from performance is growing. To help executives navigate this playing field, we applied our tool for ranking technology developers, the Lux Innovation Grid, to assess start-ups populating the catalyst landscape, and evaluated the potential for emerging technologies in catalyst markets including automotive emissions control, hydrocarbon processing, and fuel cells. In automotive, the biggest market, we analyzed the impact on platinum demand of increasingly strict automotive emissions standards around the world. Without improvements to catalyst technology, demand for platinum will expand to $14.3 billion for diesel passenger vehicles alone ? creating a vast swath of value that catalyst developers can capture by reducing PGM needs.
