Descritpion
Radiation Therapy refers to the medical use of ionizing radiation as a part of
cancer treatment to control malignant cells by destroying their DNA. Various
types of radiations are generally used for the treatment. Some of the major
ones include: high energy photons, electron beams, proton beams and neutron
beams. In the treatment, radiation can either come from a machine outside the
body, called external beam radiation therapy or from radioactive material
placed inside the body, which in this case is called internal radiation
therapy or brachytherapy. Some of the major types of external radiation
therapy treatments include: 3D-CRT, IMRT, IGRT, Tomotherapy, Stereotactic
radiosurgery, SBRT and Proton Therapy.
Due to the increasing use of radiation therapy treatment, owing to its highly
accurate and targeted nature, the radiation therapy market worldwide had
witnessed double-digit growth in the past decade. The technological
advancements taking place in the field have made the treatment more effective
and precise, thereby improving its use. North America represents the largest
RT market, followed by EMEA, both of which are generally characterized as
replacement markets. Asia Pacific and Latin America offer potential for future
growth in the new installations.
There are many opportunities which would benefit the market in future; some of
them include the low penetration rates in the emerging countries, the ageing
