Additional Information
Cosmetic Procedures No Longer Reserved for the Rich, Report Says
Worldwide, billions of dollars are spent annually on facial rejuvenation
products and services, according to healthcare market research publisher
Kalorama Information. In its new report, Facial Rejuvenation Markets, Kalorama
Information projects that growing demand from aging baby boomers will help
drive the facial rejuvenation product market to increase by 13.7% annually
through 2015, with the fillers and botulism segment leading the way as the
market shifts increasingly towards less invasive procedures.
Market trends confirm that patients are moving away from invasive procedures
that require significant downtime. The American Society of Plastic Surgeons
reports that from 2009 to 2010 the total number of laser skin resurfacing
procedures increased from approximately 10.9 million to 11.5 million,
representing a 5% increase; and the number of Botox injection procedures grew
by 12% from 4.8 million to 5.4 million.
"Technological advancements have made non-invasive treatment alternatives
increasingly safe, affordable and easy to use," said Bruce Carlson, publisher
of Kalorama Information. "As a result, patients are seeking treatment for
wrinkles and other blemishes in larger numbers than ever before, a trend that
is being magnified by the baby boomer phenomenon."
The baby boomers, who control about $2 trillion in spending power and 50% of
all discretionary income, have an overwhelming desire to retain a youthful
appearance, and they are turning to these less invasive and more affordable
procedures in great numbers.
This demand for fast, safe and non-invasive facial rejuvenation is causing a
shift in the paradigm of how the aging face is changing. More effort is being
put into reshaping rather than correcting a particular defect. Cosmetic
surgeons are focusing more on the total aging face with combination therapies.
For example, multi-modality injectables like Botox are now combined with
hyaluronic acid fillers to help correct defects around the eyes.
Kalorama Information' s Facial Rejuvenation Markets covers both products
(topical rejuvenation products, filler and botulism products and laser
resurfacing, photodynamic therapy, radiofrequency therapy and tumescent
liposuction products) and services (chemical peel, dermabrasion,
microdermabrasion and surgical restoration). It provides market revenues and
projections, procedure volumes, and discussions of trends and issues impacting
the industry, as well as profiles of key companies competing in the facial
rejuvenation market.
