Abstract

The Chinese cellular and PHS handset market has grown at a breakneck pace and the cellular handset market is forecast to reach almost 200 million units by 2011. It is in a period of transition as the 3G licenses will be issued and the shipment of 3G handset is forecast to grow fast in the forecast period. Dual mode handsets will be the major 3G handsets in early period of 3G development in China.

In 2006, China supplied 43% of the worldwide cellular handset market. This has made China the largest cellular handset production base in the world. Some multinational manufacturers plan to or have set up their factories in some other lower cost areas such as India. However, this will not change China' s role as a worldwide handset production base in recent several years. By 2011, it is forecast that about 55% of the worldwide cellular handset shipments are produced in China. The market shipment for PHS handset is forecast to fall slightly during the forecast period.
