Abstract

Report Description:

This report is the update of IMS Research' s 2008 edition of ‘The Wireless Car’ report. It focuses on existing, new, and emerging wireless technologies in applications that are in used today in automobile systems or that have the potential to be used in the future.

The wireless technologies covered in this report fall under IMS Research' s definition of ‘connectivity’: that is, having two-way communication between devices. Although it is recognised that there are many other wireless technologies, in this report only the following technologies have been covered:

  • Bluetooth® technology and Bluetooth low energy
  • Cellular technologies including; Long Term Evolution (LTE), Code Division Multiple Access (cdma), Wideband Code Division Multiple Access (W-CDMA)/ High Speed Packet Access (HSPA)
  • Wireless LAN (WLAN)
  • Dedicated Short Range Communication (DSRC)
  • Continuous Air Interface for Long and Medium range (CALM)
  • Proprietary Technologies

This study is driven by the critical challenges faced by vehicle manufacturers and system suppliers, as they consider how to compete in the market and meet the demands of consumers that now expect their cars to have the communications capabilities of their homes and workplaces.

This report covers the following applications:

  • Hands-free calling
  • Audio streaming
  • In-car internet
  • Tire pressure monitoring
  • Wireless Sensors
  • Stolen Vehicle Tracking
  • Emergency Calling
  • Telematics
  • Vehicle-to-vehicle Communication
  • Vehicle-to-infrastructure Communication
  • Electronic Toll Collection

This report considers the various wireless technologies available for systems to realise these in-car applications. The penetration of those applications and technologies is forecast to 2017.
