Abstract
Report Summary
During 2009, continuing cable digitization, analog terrestrial switch-off in
the United States, and strong demand in emerging markets such as China and
India increased shipments of digital set-top boxes to more than 200 million.
Analog terrestrial switch-offs in Europe and North America in the next 18
months combined with aggressive digitization projects in countries such as
China and Brazil will result in higher set-top box shipments over the next few
years.
This is a primary finding of the latest IMS Research study of worldwide
digital set-top boxes and iDTVs. The report quantifies and analyses the
current worldwide market for digital set-top boxes and iDTVs in terms of
number of units shipped, dollar value of manufacturer revenues, and market
shares by platform. The market statistics will use 2009 as the base year,
provide estimates for 2010, and forecasts through 2014.
This report features in-depth qualitative and quantitative analyses of the
digital TV transition across 68 countries, with TV household splits for analog
and digital cable, pay satellite, FTA analog and digital satellite, IPTV, FTA
analog and digital terrestrial, and pay digital terrestrial segments. Set-top
box shipments and revenues are split by feature class for SD 1-way, SD 2-way,
HD 1-way, HD 2-way, SD DVR, HD DVR, and pay-Digital Media Adapter (DMA) boxes.
A detailed discussion of current trends influencing the set-top box market and
pay-TV operators accompanies each country forecast and regional summary. This
report is the first of its kind to forecast pay-DMA and gateway shipments with
global STB shipments through 2014. The report also includes 2009 worldwide
market shares for set-top box manufacturers as well as 2009 market shares by
satellite, cable, IPTV, and terrestrial platform.
This report is a key strategic tool used by many companies in the digital TV
industry. Set-top box manufacturers, software and component suppliers, and
operators will all find the detailed analyses provided in this report to be
invaluable decision-making assets at any stage of business strategy.
