Abstract

“Healthcare is a global issue, but uniquely national considerations govern its delivery. As the case studies in this report reveal, telecom operator involvement in the healthcare ecosystem is not opportunistic, but it is often nascent.” Camille Mendler, Principal Analyst, Informa Telecoms & Media.

Summary:

This report illustrates how nine telecom operators in mature and emerging economies are navigating organizational and technical complexities to make a positive impact in healthcare delivery.

Overview

Healthcare is a global issue, but uniquely national considerations govern its delivery. That' s a challenge - particularly for telecom operators with international footprints. After all, telecommunications can be described as a mass production model applied to the issue and delivery of digital goods. The need to customize services - due to local regulations or customs - can be seen as a threat to profitability.

Yet as Informa Telecoms & Media' s nine operator healthcare case studies reveal, ways do exist to overcome such concerns. One approach is to facilitate mass adoption of a healthcare service, another is to focus on certain actors in the complex and fragmented healthcare ecosystem. But it can' t yet be said that operators have all the answers, or concrete results from their growing activities in healthcare.

Nevertheless, as discussed in this report, even operator healthcare services with a simple scope have the potential to deliver a great social impact.

Countries/regions covered:

  • Afghanistan
  • Australia
  • Bangladesh
  • Germany
  • Netherlands
  • Norway
  • Spain
  • United Kingdom
  • United States

Case studies include:

  • Deutsche Telekom
  • Grameenphone
  • KPN
  • Roshan
  • Sprint
  • Telefonica
  • Telenor
  • Telstra
  • Vodafone

KEY QUESTIONS ANSWERED IN THIS REPORT:

  • How are operators structured to target the healthcare sector?
  • What technologies are coupled with healthcare delivery?
  • On which stages in healthcare delivery are operators focusing their activities?
  • Do differences exist in operators' involvement in the mature versus the emerging markets?
