The first edition of InMedica' s report on the Chinese market for endoscopes
has highlighted how this regional market has tremendous growth potential.
Fuelled by the growing economy and the wide clinical applications of
endoscopes, InMedica forecasts that the Chinese market for endoscopes will
grow strongly to 2015.
Level 3 hospitals and level 2 hospitals are the main users of endoscopes; the
use of endoscopes in larparoscopy, gastrointestinal examinations and
gynecology is already widespread in China and is set to increase
significantly. Moreover, the Chinese Ministry of Health has recognized the
increased application of endoscopes and has recently released guidelines and
regulations on the use of endoscopes in gynecology and arthroscopy. The aim of
this is to improve the medical service and safety of their use in China.
With increased income and healthcare expenditure, more and more Chinese people
are paying more attention on their health. Minimally invasive surgical
procedures using endoscopes are being driven by this trend; stimulated by
this, hospitals are actively purchasing endoscopes.
The Chinese endoscopes industry is relatively consolidated; only 20 companies
supply to this market. In particular, three companies dominate this market
with a combined share above 70%. In 2009, the high-end market was dominated by
multinational companies; local suppliers only compete in the low-end market,
selling lower-priced products to level 2 and ‘other' hospitals.
Distribution channels are still the main route to market for multinational
companies although larger companies such as Olympus, are now setting up a
direct sales force.
