Abstract

Definition

Teleradiology is a field of telemedicine. It electronically transfers a patient' s radiological images from one location to another for the purposes of interpretation and/or consultation from radiologists sitting at a distant location. The main functionalities of a teleradiology system are image acquiring, image compressing, image transmitting, and image displaying. The basic requirements for a teleradiology system are:

  • An Image Transmitting Station - It uses an image compression software and networking interface devices (generally a modem) to transmit images
  • A Transmission Network - It consists of networks such as the Internet, phone lines, Wide Area Network, and Local Area Network
  • An Image Receiving/Viewing Station - It consists of a computer with monitor or printer

Teleradiology makes use of advanced software such as high-quality graphics processing, image compression, voice recognition, etc. Most teleradiology systems use Picture Archiving and Communication System (PACS) at the transmitting as well as the receiving stations. PACSs are a set of computers and networks, which are specifically meant for archiving, distributing, receiving, and presenting medical images. Generally, standard Digital Imaging and Communications in Medicine (DICOM) is used for archiving, printing and transferring of the medical images. Teleradiology is increasingly used by hospitals and institutions to gain accessibility of specialists and sub-specialists (in remote location) for radiology services. A teleradiologist can view a radiology report and provide a diagnosis without being present in the same room as the patient. An additional advantage of teleradiology is the availability of round-the-clock service. However, legislations by some countries require teleradiologists to be within the country' s borders when providing the services. The scope of this report includes the global market for the following categories:

  • Teleradiology Equipment - Equipment and hardware accessories required for setting up a teleradiology system
  • Teleradiology Software - Software solutions required for providing quality teleradiology services
  • Teleradiology Services - Revenue generated by providing teleradiology services
