Abstract

Energy consumption by Information and communications technologies (ICT) has predominantly remained a major area of concern by the businesses around the globe. Information technology (IT) products impact the environment, significantly, in terms of energy usage, carbon emissions, hazardous substances, accumulation, and disposition of electronic wastes. For instance; desktop, laptops, networking hardware, storage, and datacenter facilities consumes significant amount energy to operate and release the Greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions in the environment. As a result, there is a growing awareness, among all the private and public industry sectors, for using technology in an environmentally responsible manner.

This report discusses about the awareness of the Green IT practices and the IT infrastructure that contributes to the IT greenhouse gas emissions. Further, it highlights the best practices in Green IT adopted by businesses around the world. The report also elaborates upon the challenges that restrain companies from adopting Green IT operations in their operations, and the drivers that encourage the adoption of Green IT practices.
