About Aramid Fibers

The need for high-performance materials that can substitute and outperform naturally occurring materials led to the rise of synthetic fibers. Some of the most prominent synthetic fibers are carbon fibers, polyester, glass fibers, and aramid fibers. Of the above, "aromatic amide" or "aramid" fiber stands out on account of its scope of application and performance relative to other fibers. This man-made fiber known for its heat resistance, chemical inertness, and superior mechanical properties is rapidly gaining popularity in ballistic, heat resistant, automotive, and aeronautical applications. The fiber is poised to replace many of its substitutes including carbon fiber and glass fiber in various end-uses.

Aramid fiber is usually marked under various brand names such as Kevlar, Twaron, Technora, and Nomex. The production of the fiber is heavily concentrated in the hands of a few companies that enjoy absolute monopoly in many of the markets. Major vendors are aggressively pursuing capacity expansion and R&D to break the competition structure in many geographies. This along with robust demand from end-use industries is expected to radically influence the market structure over the forecast period.
