Adsorbents are porous materials used in commercial and industrial applications to remove fluids, organic compounds, and dissolved solids from liquids and gases by adsorbing the unwanted particles onto their surface. These materials, including zeolite, activated carbon, silica gel, clay, and metal oxides, function by forming a layer of adsorbate onto the surface through adhesion. Traditionally, in the Americas, the majority of adsorbents have been consumed in refining applications in the process industries; however, owing to the recent emphasis on environmental protection, their consumption trend has shifted toward in water purification and air separation applications.
