About Smart Grid Sensors

Smart grid sensors are compact electrical devices used to detect and monitor power system equipment. They help in solving various issues related to interoperability and inaccurate management system. Smart grid sensors function by enabling the monitoring of electrical equipment such as transformers, arrestors, power cables, and other equipment installed in the power plant or substation along with the demand side management in the smart grid. These devices monitor the power line temperature and weather conditions in power cables used to calculate the line's carrying capacity. They are also used in the residential areas and offices for enhancing the energy efficiency. A typical smart grid sensor consists of four parts: transducer, which generates electrical signals; microcomputer, which stores the output; transceiver for receiving and transmitting signals; and power source depending on its application.
