About Wind Energy O&M

O&M is crucial in any wind energy system and is still quite capital intensive. This is because the use of wind energy does not require fuel expenses; therefore, the expenditure for the equipment represents the main component cost. An adequate O&M is necessary to protect the equipment to keep them running during their expected lifetime. Good O&M practices can optimize the profitability of wind farms, thereby ultimately reducing the downtime of the turbines or leading to the extension of their lifespan. O&M also tends to be high for offshore wind energy systems compared to the terrestrial wind energy systems. This is because of the difficulty and the logistics of maintaining wind turbines in harsh marine environments.
