About Traction Transformer

A traction transformer is a major equipment in the electric traction system of trains, which is powered by electricity. It forms the most integral part of the electric traction system and helps in the smooth movement of motors such as locomotives, high-speed trains, and trams. Traction transformer is used to bring down the voltage from the overhead electric line, i.e., 15/25 kV to the desired voltage level, i.e., 0.7/1.5 kV for the traction converters in electric trains. For over a century now, these transformers have been used in railway traction. It is considered to be the best alternative to the conventional fossil-fuel*based traction systems.
