Surgical methods have been transforming significantly with the advent of automated devices and robotic systems. One such technology is the spine surgical robot. It is a robot specifically designed to work on spinal column with high precision and safety as the blood vessels and nerves surrounding the vertebra are quite delicate and can cause serious problems if damaged. Surgical robots are gaining prominence in the developed nations, within the next five years, one out of three surgeries are expected to be performed by surgical robots. Robots not only decrease the time of surgery but also maintain precision and enhance the overall success rate of an organization. Driven by the following factors the market is set to reach a market value of $364.6m by 2021 growing at a CAGR of 13.1% from its present value of $171.9m.

The chief applications of the robots are to perform operations such as laminectomy, spinal fusion, foraminotomy, discectomy, disc replacement and interlaminar implant. Spinal fusions followed by disc replacement are the major applications for spinal surgical robots. These machines are programmed to deliver surgeries in three approaches: anterior, posterior and lateral approach. The most preferred approach is the anterior approach which is generally used for degenerative disc diseases, slipped vertebrae and scoliosis.
