In most of the modern day aircrafts the number of seats ranges between 120 in narrow body aircraft to about 750 in a large wide body. The cumulative weight of these seats with IFE integration in a wide body aircraft ranges between 1200kg to 14000kg. The overall cumulative weight of these seats is an important factor which defines the economic efficiency of an aircraft service. The rising oil prices create a competitive environment for airline carriers to improve the overall efficiencies of their service. The aircraft seat manufacturers have to continuously update their materials technology and reduce the weight and match the standards defined by the airline carriers. Different materials are used in the making of aircraft seats to make them lightweight, strong and also fire resistant. A typical aircraft seat is equipped with all possible fire resistant components whether it is foam, textile or all other upholsteries used in the aircraft seat.

The materials used in an aircraft seat can be segmented based on the seat components that are installed on the seat. The aircraft seat composes of structures, foam cushions, upholsteries, fire-blocking textiles and plastic mouldings. Different materials are used in each of these components of aircraft seats. The structure of an aircraft seat can be developed using aluminium, carbon-fibre composites, steel, fiberglass and Kevlar. The foam cushions can be developed using polyurethane, neoprene, silicone and polyethylene. The upholsteries of an aircraft seat can be manufactured using FR polyester, FR nylon, leather and FR cotton and the plastic moulding is of either polycarbonate, ABS and decorative vinyl. Each different components market is defined based on the material used.The market study also segments the aircraft seat material based on the aircraft seat types into suite class, first class seats, business class seats, premium economy seats and economy class seats. The overall market has also been segmented based on the aircraft type into very large aircraft, wide body aircraft, narrow body aircraft and regional transport aircrafts.
