Hydroxypropyl methylcellulose (HPMC) is a white or slightly off-white powder without any distinct odour or taste. Also known as hypromellose, it is a synthetic modification of alkali cellulose produced by treating cotton linter or wood pulp with sodium hydroxide solution. As it is soluble in cold water as well as exhibits reversible gelation, HPMC finds numerous and versatile applications in fields ranging from construction to ophthalmology.
