Acetonitrile is the simplest of organic nitriles with the chemical formula CH3CN. It is also known as cyanomethane, methyl cyanide, ethyl nitrile, methanecarbonitrile, etc. It is a clear, colourless liquid with a sweet, ethereal odour and is an important intermediate for pharmaceutical and functional material chemicals. Acetonitrile is also used as a solvent in UV spectroscopy and polarography, in lithium batteries, for casting and moulding of plastic materials, for the extraction of fatty acids from animal and vegetable oils, in chemical laboratories for the detection of chemical residues and for spinning fibres.
