Spinal instrumentation is used to stabilize the spine and carry out the procedure during minimally invasive spinal procedures. One major focus is lessening the pressure put on the spine until successful fusion has occurred. This ensures that bone growth does not occur in a way which further impedes proper movement, and that growth is as efficient as possible. Many of the same instruments used in standard spinal fusion may be used here.

Minimally invasive procedures are often carried out through channels cut into the anatomy, often requiring the use of operating microscopes to visualize where to apply micro-surgical instrumentation. Such specialty instrumentation may raise the average cost per procedure. As a category, spinal instrumentation includes a wide variety of products, including fixation products discussed in the endoscope, fixation, and pedicle screw segments of this report.

The refinement of surgical instruments has been a continuing phenomenon since at least the 19th century, particularly as procedures involving the skull, spine, and abdomen became more common. This process was assisted with the appearance of new materials, particularly stainless steel, which allowed instruments to be manufactured inexpensively and with greater precision. The 21st century has seen an increasing emphasis on minimally invasive instrumentation, a segment which is expected to create ever more competition for traditional standard instrumentation.

This report considers instrumentation products not included in previous segments. Examples include scalpels, catheters, rongeurs, clamps, forceps, retractors and cannula, in addition to other products. Due to the high variation in costs and products used in any given procedure, this segment will consider an average cost of all such instruments used in a typical procedure. As the products within this segment can be classified as any accessories required for spinal procedures, many of these items will fall outside spinal or orthopedic department budgets and are often tied to tender or group purchasing contracts for general surgical applications. This means that exact market shares in this segment can vary, and include a large number of small competitors which market general instrumentation. This accounts for the large proportion of "other" competitors in the landscape.
