A ventilator's purpose is to pump air into the lungs with a specified pressure and volume level to induce machine-dependent breathing. Ventilators can be categorized by the device's level of sophistication and location of use. The five categories are acute-care ventilators, sub-acute care ventilators, home-care ventilators, neonatal ventilators and non-invasive ventilators. These products are tailored to meet the needs of different age groups or individuals with specific physiological limitations.

The ventilator market can be viewed to be categorized as either an "invasive" machine or "non-invasive". Within each subset, there is different settings, however, in this report, we simply segment out the various settings (acute, sub-acute, home care and neonatal) within the invasive market. The overall ventilator market is set to grow slowly with various segments being more stable, such as the home care and acute care market and other segments, namely, the sub-acute and non-invasive markets generating high but modest growth levels. Due to the relatively stagnant nature of each market, market representation of each segment is set to change only very slightly, with the sub-acute and non-invasive market growing to be a larger portion of the overall ventilator market in the future.
