The knee is a hinge-like joint that comprises the femur (thighbone), tibia and fibula (shin bones) and patella (knee cap). The patella floats in the patellar tendon over the articulation of the femur and tibia.

Like the hip, the knee is a joint that bears the entire weight of the body and is prone to degenerative wear. The femur articulates with the tibia by the two condyles, which are large rounded protrusions at the end of the thighbone. There is a medial and a lateral condyle. The majority of the body's weight is carried over the medial portion of the knee.

Within the knee joint, there are two cartilaginous rings known as menisci. The femoral condyles rest and pivot on these menisci and act as shock absorbers that prevent bone-on-bone wear. The menisci are prone to tearing, especially with sudden twisting motions, and do not heal readily.

Osteoarthritis is a degenerative process. The damage done to the joint is, for the most part, cumulative and irreversible. When the pain and functional limitation become intolerable, a replacement of the joint is necessary. The state of knee replacement technology is mature, with most patients reporting an immediate and significant increase in quality of life.
