Surgical light sources provide illumination for endoscopic cameras, surgical headlights and surgical microscopes. The concentrated light is transmitted from a base unit to the destination through a fiber optic cable made up of very pure glass fibers. The base unit contains the illuminating bulb, which can vary from one light source to another. During minimally invasive surgery (MIS) procedures, endoscopic cameras rely on light from the light source, as there is essentially no background illumination. Generally, overhead surgical lighting is adequate in invasive, open procedures.

However, if additional illumination is required, a surgical headlight can be worn by the surgeon. The majority of surgical headlights use xenon. Therefore, surgical light sources are used in both MIS and open surgeries.
