Unit sales of premium-priced pump systems will contribute to overall growth in the infusion therapy device market.

The segments comprising the infusion therapy device market experienced differing growth rates in 2014. A determining factor for growth rates was the increasing emphasis on patient safety. As a result, ASPs for infusion pumps will increase as manufacturers incorporate more sophisticated software that allows practitioners to administer the correct dosage and medication to the right patient. Integration with electronic medical records (EMRs) and wireless capabilities are important drivers in the infusion pump market. However, healthcare expenditure reductions have led to a decline in hospitals beds and a shift towards non-acute settings.

Sales of IV sets and needleless connectors remain a significant source of revenues for companies that are able to rely on their presence in the infusion pump market to sell related accessories. While the ASP for a pump is significantly higher than for an IV set or a connector, a pump is a one-time purchase. Recent experience with recalls has illustrated the challenges associated with maintaining a large installed base of pumps.

The needleless connector market is heavily dependent on clinical results and practitioner preference. Problems associated with positive displacement devices have led to a trend towards the increasing use of neutral displacement devices, which is expected to persist over the forecast period.
