Abstract
This IDC study examines the adoption trends of software-on-demand applications
among small and medium-sized businesses (SMBs) in the Asia/Pacific through a
recent end-user survey. The study indicates that the software-on-demand
adoption rate is only a moderate 5% among SMBs in the Asia/Pacific. However,
for those that are subscribing to software-on-demand applications, it is clear
that the applications are not limited to customer relationship management
(CRM). It also highlights the drivers and challenges of software-on-demand
adoption in the region. While data security remains the top concern, other
issues, like a preference of having data remain on-site and the recurring cost
of ownership, are other discouraging factors for software-on-demand adoption in
the region.
"Despite the fact that the media spotlight has been pointing toward CRM
applications, the survey indicates that users are interested in other
applications that may be delivered in an on-demand model," says Sheila Lam,
senior market research analyst, Enterprise Applications, IDC Asia/Pacific.
"Simple applications with specific functions, like collaborative software and
accounting applications, are popular among customers in the Asia/Pacific."
