Abstract
This IDC study presents the server installed base from 2002 to 2012 broken down
into U.S. and worldwide market segments. In addition, data is provided by size
class, operating system, and chip architecture. By analyzing the data, the
reader should be able to answer the following questions:
- How many systems are being retired per year, and do I have the right products to satisfy that demand?
- Is there a chip architecture that is showing a greater opportunity that I should be addressing?
- What hardware platform is declining in installed base, and can I capture market share with my product offerings?
"While overall the installed base of servers is growing, most of this growth is
happening in the volume server space. The installed server landscape is
undergoing a transformation as proprietary CISC systems are rapidly being
retired and server consolidation gains momentum through the use of multicore
processors and virtualization. In addition, users are looking at the power and
cooling requirements of their aging equipment as they try and reduce costs of
their IT infrastructure," said Lloyd Cohen, director, Worldwide Market Analysis.
