This IDC study presents an updated five-year forecast for the worldwide wearable applications market."The good news is that app development targeting wearable devices has grown relatively well despite stalled unit volume growth," says John Jackson, vice president of Mobility and Consumer Research at IDC. "The bad news is that it remains subscale relative to the mobile app market. We see an inflection point in the 2018-2019 period as integrated cellular connectivity connects standalone apps with standalone devices. However, on the consumer side, direct and ad-supported revenue models will remain particularly challenged for the larger-scale smart watch category. We continue to see a large number of logical enterprise use cases for both workflow-specific and horizontal applications. Organizations with relatively more mature mobility profiles should be actively evaluating wearable apps as an additional source of efficiency and competitive advantage."
