This IDC study provides an analysis of Western European vertical market indicators to understand the structure, size, and economic importance on a country level of all major Western European industry sectors. Vertical markets covered include discrete manufacturing, process manufacturing, retail and wholesale, resource industries and construction, utilities, telecommunications, media, transportation, personal and professional services, financial services, and the public sector. It focuses on the GDP contribution of vertical markets to total GDP on a country level, as well as employment numbers in the 16 Western European countries in 2015. To assess IT sophistication, IT-over-GDP and IT-per-employee ratios are also given for each vertical market. "The Western European economy is characterized by large diversities and fragmentation," said Carla La Croce, research analyst, IDC European Industry Solutions. "Nevertheless, there are common struggles threatening stability, as deflation, austerity, and unemployment have depressed the whole region, which most countries are starting to slowly overcome. There is potential for future growth, but efforts should be aimed at innovation to catch the opportunities offered by new technological frontiers."
