This IDC study discusses how smartwatch average selling prices (ASPs) remained essentially flat, going from $405.66 in 4Q15 to $403.85 in 1Q16. Without holiday discounts, ASPs on smartwatches returned to their regular retail prices. Apple moved ASPs the most, returning to above $500 after ASPs dipped to $491 from aggressive holiday discounting. The move to drop the price on the Sport at the end of the quarter did not materially impact ASPs. Meanwhile, Linux maintained its place as the lowest-price smartwatch maker on the market ($80.68), while Android Wear ($326.44) and Tizen ($342.95) balanced against watch OS. "Smartwatches continue to gain in popularity, even as the market still wrestles with firmly establishing itself," said Ramon T. Llamas, research manager for IDC's Wearable program. "With very few exceptions, the market was representative of first-generation smartwatches shipping into the market. That there is an appetite for these devices is a positive sign for the market and leaves plenty of room to grow and appeal to a larger market of potential customers."
