This IDC study analyzes the progress that operators across Western Europe have made in the migration toward the next generation of broadband access networks. It provides IDC's view on the future development for technologies, services, and players in this space. IDC's definition of next-generation access includes three different forms: very-high-speed digital subscriber line (VDSL), DOCSIS 3 cable services, and fiber to the premises (FTTP). The document includes quantitative insights into development of average bandwidth, coverage, connections, and spending for each of the next-generation access technologies."As next-generation access networks become hybrid, the objective of service providers should be to create a consistent and rich portfolio of services that is agnostic of the underlying network," said Jan Hein Bakkers, senior research manager, IDC's European Telecoms and Networking team.
