The global economy was volatile in the first half of 2015, and downside risks have increased, but mature economies have so far remained relatively stable. The United States rebounded from a weak first quarter to record stronger growth in the second quarter, while Western Europe has for the most part continued its gradual recovery (in spite of the crisis in Greece). IDC expects constant currency CAGRs of 5.1% and 5.3% for the United States and Western Europe, respectively, over the forecast period. In 2014, 12.6% of all commercial software revenue was generated from public cloud subscriptions, up from a 10.5% share in 2013 and expected to reach 22.2% by 2019. This translates to an on-premise/other CAGR of 2.9% against a public cloud CAGR of 18% in the five-year 2015-2019 forecast period. This IDC study provides the worldwide market forecast for software from 2015 to 2019."This IDC study includes for the first time a segmentation between traditional on-premise (license, maintenance, and other subscription) revenue and public cloud (software as a service [SaaS] and platform as a service [PaaS]) revenue," says Rasmus Andsbjerg, research director, Software and Public Cloud Services Trackers. "It is evident that the long-projected shift from the 2nd Platform to the 3rd Platform has gained momentum and will continue to drive growth in years to come."
