This IDC study examines and contrasts the performance of the leading home video game console hardware makers and related game software providers in 2016. The market share changes of the Wii U, Wii, PlayStation 4, PlayStation 3, Xbox One, and Xbox 360 are tracked since 2011 along several dimensions. North American dynamics are further broken out from those of Western Europe, Asia/Pacific (including Japan), and a combined rest of the world (ROW) region. The state of digital-only microconsoles is considered in less detail."Microsoft and Sony went after each other hammer and tongs from a suggested console hardware retail price perspective last year. The net result was a 6% drop in TV-based game-related spending worldwide in 2016, and more than a $75 hardware bundle price drop for both Xbox One and PS4 compared to 2015. Microsoft was the primary aggressor, and its strategy worked to an extent: Xbox One improved its competitive position relative to PS4 in 2016 compared with 2015 in some key areas, although PS4 certainly remained the top dog overall." - Lewis Ward, IDC's research director of Gaming and VR/AR
