This IDC study forecasts home video game console hardware and software and related services through 2021. North America is broken out from Western Europe, Asia/Pacific (AP), and the combined rest of the world (ROW) region. Seventh-, eighth-, and ninth-generation consoles are contrasted in aggregate, and packaged game discs are considered separately from digital game distribution systems and revenue streams. Digital-only microconsoles, which are beginning to impact HDTV gaming at the margins, are also considered, but in much less detail than the packaged game playing home consoles from Microsoft, Nintendo, and Sony that continue to dominate the TV-based gaming landscape."Largely thanks to Nintendo's massive turnaround in its TV-based games business, the home game console market is on track to hit a new record in total spending in 2018 and 2019, at over $45 billion generated both years, easily surpassing the Wii's rainmaker year of 2008, during which the home console games industry generated about $41 billion in hardware, game software, and online multiplayer subscription service spending worldwide." - Lewis Ward, IDC's research director of Gaming and AR/VR.
