This IDC study provides guidance to CIOs and other strategic leaders who desire to mature their cloud computing capabilities in order to thrive and survive in an economy that is undergoing a dramatic shift with a profound digital transformation. Companies at large desire to mature their cloud computing capabilities, but IDC doesn't see their action matching their ambition yet. IDC believes that one big factor as to why many organizations are challenged by developing their maturity is the lack of structure and guidance on how to develop a cloud transition strategy. In many cases, discussions about why and how get mixed up, causing real decision making to be virtually impossible.

IDC suggests that companies assess the value drivers and answer the why question first. When there is a clear understanding of what value is being sought after, assess the true requirements of the three main categories:

  • Performance
  • Risk
  • Operations

"Companies need to develop a structured cloud transition strategy today," says Erik Berggren, vice president, Cloud Transition Strategies with IDC's IT Executive Programs. "There's a gap between what is desired and what is actually getting done, stemming from a lack of guidance and structure for how to do it."
