This IDC study, written for IoT architects, IoT directors, and CIOs, presents a model for assembling the components of an IoT implementation and governing its application based on how data is expected to change as it flows through the system. As discussed in Enterprise Mobility: Thinking Inside the Cube - A Model for IoT Planning (IDC #256560, June 2015) and Enterprise Mobility: Managing Stakeholders in an IoT Ecosystem, an IoT implementation is complex and multifaceted. This study explores the process of partitioning the implementation into a set of factors, or dimensions, and identifying the fundamental components of each factor and determining how those components relate to each other. These are fundamental prerequisites to IoT Implementation and to developing effective governance policies for achieving desired business outcomes.

Having all implementation components work in tandem requires the concerted effort of several parties. Establishing guidelines on how these parties must interact is fundamental to the proper implementation of an IoT application. IoT architects can use these guidelines to ensure effective operation and hold all responsible parties accountable for their portion of the implementation.

"Using the data transformation chain, IoT implementation directors will be able to safeguard the usability of the generated output by delegating responsibility for each data type to a set of stakeholders," says Adib Carl Ghubril, adjunct analyst with IDC's Research Network.
