This IDC study examines attitudes, current use, and planned acquisition of security solutions by U.S. small businesses and midsize firms. SMB engagement with security technology continues to evolve. The importance of security and security management as IT spending priorities sets the stage for the relative share of spending associated with different approaches to security deployment. The use of different security capabilities shows the variety of different endpoint and network solutions used.
"SMBs have been shifting their thinking about security resources from a cost to be contained to a capability to be optimized," said Ray Boggs, VP, SMB research at IDC. "The growth of cloud capabilities, mobility, and ecommerce all open the door to risk that must be managed if the full benefits of technology are to be realized." Boggs noted that differences in SMBs by company size and attitude segment pose challenges to vendors seeking to craft the ideal mix of products and market targeting. But independent of specific requirements, SMBs are increasingly looking to vendors and their channel partners to address proactively the emerging threats that are often associated with new productivity and customer engagement resources.
