This IDC study is an introduction to the use of business-enabling APIs to create new product and service revenue opportunities, grow customer bases, and rapidly scale product development capabilities. It is designed to help CIOs and LOB technology executives understand different types of APIs, how APIs can be used to monetize business assets, and what key components are needed in a strategy to leverage APIs. Business-enabling APIs - the subject of this study - can take many forms, ranging from enabling organizations to unlock and syndicate content and service assets, add digital extensions to physical products, and transform and add value to data and information from external sources to also being used for inbound/outbound ecosystem intelligence and communications in the innovation and development of products. APIs have been an essential part of the IT toolkit for some time, and most IT organizations use them for integration of enterprise applications, but a growing number of organizations are realizing that APIs can serve broader business purposes including enabling new and digitally transformed products and services that generate revenue.
"The unfolding era of digital transformation will require organizations to meet rapidly changing product, service, and experience needs and opportunities with suppliers, partners, and customers, and business-enabling APIs are a key component in achieving that aim," says Marc Strohlein, adjunct research advisor with IDC's Research Network.
