This IDC study presents a model for facilitating strategic planning discussions about designing and deploying an IoT system. CIOs can use the IoT system model - the IoT cube - to guide their thinking during strategic planning sessions. The cube may also be used as a means to frame any IoT conversation, among colleagues in the C-suite or across the organization, to keep resulting objectives congruent.

This study shows how a system model can help CIOs specify the requirement of an IoT system and how ecosystem stakeholders may be identified and differentiated based on those requirements.

Referring to the IoT cube will help CIOs:

  • Specify the critical requirements of their IoT system
  • Identify partners that are stakeholders in the IoT ecosystem and that could address the critical requirements
  • Ensure the resulting IoT system does in fact provide the intended insight

"The IoT is a complex concept requiring an ecosystem of stakeholders that are offering a wide span of capabilities and seeking varying objectives. Modelling this ecosystem dynamic is a crucial first step in the successful deployment of an IoT system," says Adib Carl Ghubril, adjunct analyst with IDC's Research Network.
