This IDC study examines attitudes and technology engagement of U.S. SMBs across 17 industries: agriculture/mining/construction, manufacturing, transportation/warehousing/utilities, communications/media, banking/finance, insurance, real estate, architecture/engineering, legal services, other professional/scientific/technical services, healthcare/social assistance, education (private sector), wholesale, retail, other business services, other consumer services/arts/entertainment/accommodation/food services, and accounting. After reviewing company counts by industry, basic business concerns/priorities are presented along with top IT spending priorities and technology attitudes, including interest in cloud investment. The use of advanced communications capabilities is examined, included hosted VoIP as well as audio, video, and Web conferencing. The study concludes with an assessment of future on-premise versus cloud resource deployment.
"SMBs vary as much by industry as they do by company size when it comes to technology attitudes, ownership, and acquisition plans," said Ray Boggs, VP SMB research at IDC. "While cloud, mobility, and the use of advanced communications resources like hosted VoIP, unified communications, and videoconferencing have all been on the rise, some SMB verticals are clearly ahead of the curve." Boggs noted that the preference for cloud delivery is still the exception rather than the rule in many firms, though the share of firms open to either cloud or on-prem solutions has been growing.
